Kava has a long, sacred history that goes back over 3,000 years across the Pacific Islands. It began in places like Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, where the kava plant naturally grows. Islanders discovered that the roots of this plant could be prepared into a calming, earthy drink that brought people together.
In ancient times, kava wasn’t just a beverage — it was a cultural ceremony. Chiefs, spiritual leaders, and community elders used kava during meetings, rituals, peace gatherings, and important decisions. Drinking kava symbolized respect, unity, and connection.
Traditionally, the roots were ground or chewed, mixed with water, and served in a large wooden bowl called a tanoa. Everyone would sit in a circle and drink from a shared coconut cup. The moment was slow, peaceful, and meant to bring clarity and harmony to the group.
